Fairbanks

This project takes place in Fairbanks, Alaska, located in the northern part of the state. Before the construction of the Alaska Highway, Fairbanks was a bustling mining town in the middle of the largest territories in the United States. One hundred years later, the small boomtown has a diversified economy, and is continuing its role as the gateway to Alaska's Interior and Arctic. With a population of nearly 32,000, Fairbanks has a unique small town feel to it. Volunteers on this project will work at a day camp for children of all ages; instructor to student ratios average about eight to two for pre-school programs and ten to two for older children. Throughout the week, guest specialists share their knowledge on bugs, farming, forests, and other hands-on subjects. Children learn about the ecosystems of Interior Alaska, including the people, plants, and animals that call Alaska home. Volunteers will help with all aspects including playing games, doing crafts, singing songs, taking hikes, and growing food in the garden.

This project runs through the end of July 2008.

Housing will be in a home stay situation.

Volunteer Requirements

must be 18 years of age
physically fit
good communication skills
comfortable with presenting short talks to groups
basic first aid skills
enjoy working with children
possess a positive attitude!

Project Cost

Alaska Program Fee: US $1,697.00 US Dollars

This covers all room and board as well as an airport pickup and transportation to the project.
