Eagle River
This project takes place in Eagle River, Alaska, located within Chugach State Park. The half million acres that make up Chugach State Park are filled with rugged mountains, ice caps, and sweeping glaciers. Wildlife abounds, including brown and black bears, dall sheep, mountain goats, moose, wolves, bald and golden eagles, and all five species of salmon. Anchorage has grown up next door to this amazing wilderness, and residents and visitors find quick retreat in the park. Recreation includes hiking, climbing, wildlife viewing, water sports such as kayaking and canoeing, hunting, and ATV, mountain bike and horseback riding. Surrounded by high peaks and rich in wildlife, the Eagle River Valley contains 26 of the most scenic miles of the Historic Iditarod Trail (popularly referred to as the Crow Pass Trail). This popular hiking trail crosses a high pass, drops below the snout of two large glaciers, and crosses a wild un-bridged river to reach the log cabin Nature Center and road system. Volunteers will act as Assistant Natural History Interpreters which will involve visitor information services; sales of small nature gift shop items; leading formal interpretive programs (2 hour nature walks on the Rodak Nature Trail); some trail and facilities maintenance/janitorial tasks; and opportunities for independent projects (i.einterpretive display design, model building, etc).
