Justine Squires writes......about her experience while volunteering in Nepal.
Anyway I wanted to email you to say thank you! Thank you for ever being on the internet which allowed me to volunteer with VSN who were always supportive. I could never of imagined that my intended 2 months volunteering would turn into more than a year and to have grown and extended family of over 50 children. I don't know where to begin to thank you for linking me with VSN as Emma is a gem, Putima is fantastic and the kids from Himali became my life. I remember you coming to Himali Orphanage and it was pretty overwhelming at the time - well you'll be pleased to hear (maybe you've already heard) they have been moved - but what you might not of heard is just how wonderful their new home is! It's truly beautiful - a stand alone house in the middle of surrounding paddy fields on the border of the valley. Their scabies and lice were completely cleared out the day I left Nepal. From an orphanage - with no money for food, children not going to school and never had a check up or even a plaster available let alone any serious medicine, who where cooking for them selves from age 6 - hounded by the neighbours when they went to get water - and up to 40 children left on their own to fend from them selves for months at a time. This was Himali orphanage. Now - there is money for the food provided by Isis, so the kids can go to school rather than beg for money, they do go to school and there is a Didi who cooks and helps clean, there is a file for each child - and medical records - they are taken to Sechen clinic for free health and dental care. There is a medical box and volunteers attend to any problems - but most of all they are in a new house which has improved their health 10 fold within the first 2 weeks the children stopped the chesty coughing. I just wanted to let you know how it was going and how happy I was to be able to leave now that this had all happened. Not that I was happy to leave but I will be back and I will do what I can for the kids now I am in England. These children are my brothers and sisters and I am grateful to your organisation for getting me into this situation. Many thanks Justine |
