Do I need travel insurance?
As with any overseas traveling, insurance is recommended. For the China, Costa Rica, and South Dakota programs it is compulsory to have travel insurance which also includes medical or health insurance as part of the policy.

Can I purchase a part-month cover?
Yes, pro rata (US $3.30 per day).

How long is a month block?
Months are equal to one calendar month. For example, if the first day of cover is 5 April 2008, and cover is for 1 month, the last day of cover will be 4 May 2008.

How do I pay an extra US $100 to extend my insurance by one month?
You can do this at http://www.volunteer.org.nz/insurance/extensions.php.

If I decide to travel before or after my volunteer time, will I be covered by GVN insurance?
Yes, you may extend your insurance to cover other non-volunteering travel during the same trip, provided you will be gone less than 6 months.

If I decide to extend my volunteering stint once I arrive, can I also extend my insurance cover?

Can my friend, who is not a volunteer, get travel insurance?
Insurance can only be purchased if the non-volunteer is a volunteer's spouse or dependent child/children.

Does insurance cover emergency medical evacuations?
Emergency medical evacuations are covered subject to the conditions in the policy details. You will be given a 24-hour call-free number to reach the Insurer in order to check on your eligibility for cover in case of an emergency. See Coverage Section 3 of the policy for more details.

Is there an age limit for insurance coverage?
The age limit for insurance coverage is 85 years, however under the Personal Injury Section 1 the age limit for Weekly Injury is 75.

Am I eligible for insurance cover if I volunteer in an area with political instability?
Yes, subject to the terms and conditions of the policy. See Coverage Section 13 of the policy for more details.

Is airfare covered in the event of a death or serious illness of a family member prior to departure?
Yes, subject to the terms and conditions of the policy. See Coverage Section 5 of the policy for more details.

If I have chosen to pay the Full Cover program fee, do I automatically get insurance?
You are covered for one month (value of US$150), but you will need to send us your dates of travel in order for us to organize your policy. You can do this at http://www.volunteer.org.nz/insurance/details.php. If you would like to extend your coverage beyond a month, please purchase additional time at http://www.volunteer.org.nz/insurance/confirm.php.
