Medical Project

This project allows volunteers with experience and/or qualifications in medicine to help at an under-funded rural hospital. The Gracias hospital continually struggles to meet demand within its meagre budget and is therefore in constant need of assistance.

Volunteer Activities

Volunteers will participate in many of the roles associated with shadowing nurses and doctors, laboratory work, pre-natal, intensive care, physiotherapy and more. The level and scope of your involvement will be determined by your experience and knowledge. Volunteers on this project require at least an intermediate level of Spanish and all applications need to be accompanied with a copy of your CV (résumé).

Program Location & Accommodation

Volunteers are located in the town of Gracias, 6 hours from Tegucigalpa, Honduras' capital. Located at the foot of Montaña de Celaque and home to the Celaque National Park, this area boasts one of the largest tracts of cloud forest left in Central America. Gracias is populated by several small communities and has one of the largest Native Indian populations in Honduras. Of these, the most significant in the area are the Lenca, famous for their production of handicrafts and ceramics. Volunteers are hosted at a homestay in Gracias within walking distance of their work placement. Where possible volunteers are hosted by a member of the staff at the hospital where they will be working.
