China Feedback

"Not until I came to China did I grasp as much as I do now what it means to be American and I am sure my friends from elsewhere feel the same way. Each person that has crossed my path here endows me with another perspective, another voice in the vibrant music of living."

Zach Williams

"I feel like I am putting together a more complete idea of this country and its all-important history in every city I visit, especially here in the capital and surrounded by so many different strata of Chinese society… just being here and existing, I feel like I am learning quite a bit every day."

Jonathan Rogers

"Personally, I feel that I have benefited greatly from my experience in China. Being around the children has improved my communication skills and while I was never really a "child person" before, now I absolutely adore kids. I was particularly touched when, on my final day, all the kids came running up to my desk with little presents, drawings and cards reading things like "teacher happy everlasting" and "our like you!""

Volunteer in China

The Global Volunteer Network currently has teaching English opportunities available through our partner organization in China. This will give you a chance to help underprivileged farming families who cannot afford to send their children to better resourced city schools, and to participate in the daily life of a rural Chinese community.

The Program

In this program you will be based in the village of Jiuguan teaching English to local kindergarten and primary school students. As with the urban program there is a strong need to learn English in order for the students to become successful. However, in this program most of the students you will be working with will be from poor farming families who cannot afford to send their children to better resourced city schools.

Because you will be living in a poor rural area there may be the opportunity to take part in wider community development activities as they arise. This is a new program and volunteers can potentially help to develop new initiatives.

The type of teaching you'll be expected to do will consist of helping the students practice comprehension and pronunciation. You may be needed to do a little more, but if so, you'll be guided by the teachers and school principal. You are the sole teacher in the classroom. There are Chinese teachers of English in the schools that also take these students for English on other aspects of the language. For this reason your lessons should have a practical approach focusing on comprehension and building confidence in the student's English speaking skills. This program is located in Shandong Province and you can teach conversational English at a primary or kindergarten level.

Program Location

Yantai is a coastal region on the eastern tip of the Shandong Peninsula, located in Northern China, across the Yellow Sea from Japan. Volunteers are placed at a rural school in the village of Jiuguan 40 minutes outside of Yantai City.

Program Requirements

As a volunteer teacher in China you must:

  • be a native speaker of English
  • be at least 18 years old - the upper age limit is 72 years
  • have no health problems
  • be enthusiastic and motivated
  • be from Australia, Canada, Europe, Ireland, UK, USA, New Zealand, or Singapore

* Please note that for this program you do not need to be a teacher or to have had any experience teaching English, however we will be assessing any experience that you have had in instructing children and young people. We will also be noting any leadership qualities you have, such as confidence in large group settings, ability to work independently, self motivation, and enthusiasm about working in an unknown environment.

Program Schedule

This does vary from school to school, but generally volunteers usually teach between 14 hours and 20 hours per week. The teaching timetable is discussed personally with the school principal or English teaching staff. There may be some evening and weekend classes in your program. School exams take place at both mid term and end of term which will affect your teaching schedule to varying degrees depending on the school you are placed in.

Ideally, you will arrive for the beginning of the semester.

  • Semester One: Typically, March 1 - late July
  • Semester Two: Typically, September 1 - late December

Please note that the program will be closed during January and February due to Chinese New Year.
